Kevin Trudeau’s Book, the Natural Cure for Insomnia
About two years ago consumers started seeing a program on their televisions that appeared to be some kind of talk show entitled “A Closer Look.” In the show Pat Mathews interviews Kevin Trudeau in regards to his new book, The Natural Cures “They” Don’t Want You to Know About. What some consumers don’t realize is that the “interview” is actually a staged infomercial. In the interview Kevin extols the virtues of natural cures and their effectiveness against practically any disease including cancer, diabetes, and herpes. He also goes on a tirade against the FDA, FTC, and the medical industry. It all sounds good. Buy a book for $30 and experience perfect health. Wow! Let’s see if there is truth in Kevin’s “revolutionary book.”
This is a book review so I’ll try not to dwell on Mr. Trudeau’s past for too long. However, it is important to know that he is a convicted felon. In the early nineties Kevin was convicted on two counts of credit card fraud. The first was committed against American Express where he was able to steal roughly $120,000. The second charge was brought by a handful of banks that he had defrauded of roughly $5,000. For the two charges he spent two years in prison and had to pay restitution to the credit companies. In his book Kevin mentions that he spent time in prison because he was trying to help people. In reality it was because he had stolen thousands of dollars.
The second major incident involved the FTC in 2003 when Kevin, his company, and affiliates were sued for misleading consumers (at the time Kevin and some associates were touting coral calcium as a cure for cancer and biotape as a pain preventative). The final findings of the court were against Kevin and Mr. Barefoot (the coral calcium guy). In his book he addresses this, saying that he knows what it’s like to be persecuted by the FDA and FTC. That’s why he’s fighting so hard now. One problem, when Kevin was in the Illinois court he had a chance to avoid all charges. All he had to do was prove that the statements he had been making were true. Mr. Trudeau didn’t even offer a defense. If he was so concerned about his message he would have stood his ground in court. Instead he settled. In the end Kevin was found guilty and had to pay $2 million to consumers and was banned from selling or advertising products. Basically the guy’s a crook.
Now that we understand the author we can move onto his book. Well, I’m not sure where to start. The writing itself appears to have been done entirely by Mr. Trudeau, and is juvenile at best. It’s actually quite irritating to read. Most thoughts simply trail off or have no beginning to start. I think Kevin had a page goal because he circles through all of his content at least three times. If you’re looking for a well-written book this is a bad choice.
What does the book contain? Basically it contains a lot of jumbled content that tries to lead you to Mr. Trudeau’s website. For about 2/3 of the book he rambles on about the FTC, FDA, and the Medical Industry as a whole. It just gets boring listening to someone complain for 50 pages. In the new edition of the book there are “cures” for 50 diseases. One problem arises because Kevin has absolutely no idea what he is talking about. I’ll outline a couple such topics;
The Vinegar Cure: Figured I’d try this one out for some indigestion. When I first took the vinegar my stomach burned terribly then felt good for five minutes. After the five minutes I had some of the worst stomach pain of my life.
Body Alkalinity: This is a joke. It’s true that if your body is alkaline cancer cells can’t survive. However, neither can any of the other cells in your body. It’s easy not to have cancer if you are already dead.
Much of the content in Kevin’s book and from the infomercial is true in a literal sense. However, everything scientific is left out in the open. He mentions many studies that have been done concerning the topics covered in the book, but fails to name any of them, probably because they don’t exist or because he manipulated the content of the studies. Everything in this book is far too vague to be of use to anybody.
It’s true that there are problems with the FTC, FDA, and medical industry. However, Trudeau isn’t any more insightful than you or me using Google to search health tips. Trudeau wrote his book because it was the only option left open to him by the FTC. Like any jerk you don’t like he uses scare and sympathy tactics to try and suck you in. When he does suck you in he keeps trying to gouge you for more money through his newsletters that are just as vague as his book.
If someone walked up to you on the street and said they could fix all of your health problems you’d probably call them crazy. You’d definitely say they were off their rocker if they had an extensive criminal record and claimed to be the only one with the secrets. Trudeau did all those things. The only difference is that he used fake talk shows to advertise his product. Don’t be misled by Kevin Trudeau or his book. All the information he uses (credible or not so credible) is readily available for free on the internet.
